The annual National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference officially opened on Monday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre under the theme “Robust Governance for Sustainable Village Development.”
The event, which runs from May 19 to 23, brings together leaders from over 254 Amerindian communities to engage in key discussions centered on development and the well-being of Indigenous peoples.
In his opening remarks, NTC Chairman Derrick John emphasised the importance of strong and effective leadership. He said that the theme of the conference speaks volumes, reminding leaders of their responsibility to govern with diligence and efficiency to ensure sustainable growth in their villages.
“The many resources in the villages and communities must be used in a sustainable way for the development of the communities,” John said.
He further highlighted the progress seen across various sectors, stating that Indigenous peoples are not left behind in the transformation and development.
The Chairman described the NTC as a unique opportunity, stating, “No way in the world we have this opportunity. Where we can sit and we can deliberate with the President and other cabinet members to bring to the forefront issues affecting us.”
He further urged all the toshaos to take full advantage of the five-day conference, encouraging them to make a lasting impact and continue meaningful dialogue.
“Let us make this dialogue a meaningful one,” he said.
John also called for fair and accurate media reporting.
“Indigenous peoples, we practice and we have a right to self-determination, we have been doing this for ages. No one don’t have to come and tell us what is good for us,” he said.
He also used the opportunity to criticise political interference, specifically referencing recent protest actions that disrupt the lives of Guyanese and Indigenous communities, such as road blockages.
