Queen’s College (QC) has made history by launching the first-ever squash club in a public school in Guyana.
The momentous occasion unfolded at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown on Monday, signaling a significant step forward in promoting sports within the education system.
The newly established QC Squash Club aims to instill values of sportsmanship, discipline, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle among its students.
The driving force behind this initiative are QC students and national squash players, Egan Bulkan and Ethan Bulkan, the club’s founding members.
At the launch, Ethan Bulkan shared the journey of establishing the club and voiced his aspirations for greater representation of QC students in Guyana’s Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) teams.
“…I hope that if Junior CASA is held in Guyana next year, or whenever next, that Queen’s College can have quite a few members on the team,” he stated, highlighting the club’s potential to nurture national talent.

Looking further ahead, Bulkan also drew inspiration from squash’s recent inclusion in the Olympic Games, suggesting a bright future for aspiring players within the club.
“With hard work, dedication, drive, and hunger, I don’t see why a member of this QC Squash Club cannot become an Olympian in the years to come,” he confidently asserted.
Donna Isles, the Headmistress of Queen’s College, underscored the integral role of sports in a holistic educational environment.
She expressed her appreciation to the Bulkan family for their proactive approach to establishing the club, offering students invaluable exposure to the sport.
Addressing an enthusiastic group of over twenty potential club members, Isles declared, “You are setting the pace, so you are the pace-setters in Guyana for Squash because we’ll have the first Squash Club.”
She further encouraged a broader adoption of squash, urging students from other schools to either join the QC club or create their own, thus expanding the sport’s footprint across Guyana.
David Fernandes, the President of the Guyana Squash Association, encouraged the students showing interest in joining the club.
He emphasised the multifaceted benefits of sports participation, which extend beyond physical fitness.
“When you play a sport, you don’t only get fit and determined and dedicated, but you also learn how to work along with other personalities,” Fernandes explained.
“It gives us an opportunity to meet new people and to understand differences and dynamics… outside of school.”
Expressing his optimism for the new venture, Fernandes wished the club “all the success that it deserves” and encouraged the students to “take the opportunity and to enjoy this process.”
