The accuracy of the speed cameras installed under the new Automated Speed Ticketed System is verified through calibration by the Guyana National Bureau of Standard (GNBS).
The new system was implemented in April with 2,000 tickets issued. The head of the Legal Metrology Department at the bureau, Shailendra Rai confirmed that the company installing these cameras must coordinate with the bureau.
“We work with the company that is doing the installation and the Guyana Police Force, so as they install these instruments, they would notify us, we would go to these instruments, have it verified before they actually add it to the system,” Rai said.
GNBS is responsible for the verification of all measuring instruments used in trade, health and safety and law enforcement in Guyana.

Rai reminded that the bureau has calibrated the mobile guns and it continues to support the Guyana Police Force for this project.
“Based on the current ticketing system that they have, in order to actually incorporate the new instrument into the system, they must have it verified with the bureau and we would normally issue a verification certificate,” Rai added.
He also provided a breakdown of the measuring process. These cameras are part of the fix system cameras and if the vehicle is within that measurement range, it would pick up the speed and tell the driver whether they are over the speed limit or not.
“We correspond the reading. Our instrument is the standard and in metrology, there are tolerances that are used and once the value obtained from the instrument under the test is within the acceptable tolerance then the camera would be approved,” he said.
The new system is part of the government’s efforts to tackle road accidents and speeding violations in the country. The tickets are distributed in alignment with the recent amendments to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
Payments can be made via any MMG agent across the country using the respective ticket number of by simply scanning the QR code on the document.
