Abiola Jackman wins historic gold at AMBC Elite Championships

Abiola Jackman has made history for Guyanese boxing, becoming the first boxer from the nation, male or female, to win a gold medal at the Americas Boxing Confederation (AMBC) Elite Championships.

Jackman secured the historic victory on Thursday evening in Ecuador, delivering a commanding performance in the final of the Women’s 81kg division.

She faced local fighter Daniela Espana, dominating every round to earn a unanimous decision from the judges.

This gold medal adds to Jackman’s impressive recent form, which includes being named Best Female Boxer at this year’s Caribbean Boxing Championships in St. Lucia.

Her achievement also makes her only the second Guyanese to medal at the AMBC Elite Championships, following Desmond Amsterdam’s bronze in 2022.

Steve Ninvalle, President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), lauded Jackman’s performance, emphasizing its significance for Guyanese boxing, particularly for women in the sport.

“This is a monumental moment not only for Abiola but for all of Guyanese boxing,” Ninvalle stated.

“It goes to show that with hard work, dedication, and the right opportunities, our boxers can rise to any occasion and make the country proud.”

Ninvalle reiterated the GBA’s commitment to gender equality and highlighted the role of Abiola and her sister Alesha Jackman in inspiring future female fighters.

He added that Jackman’s success is a testament to her consistent growth and dedication.

The GBA remains focused on providing exposure and development opportunities for its boxers, believing Jackman’s gold medal will serve as an inspiration for all Guyanese fighters to pursue international success.
