A Gift to Guyana: Abiola Jackman dedicates historic AMBC gold medal to nation’s 59th Independence

Abiola Jackman, Guyana’s newly crowned boxing heroine, has dedicated her groundbreaking Americas Boxing Confederation (AMBC) Elite Championships gold medal to the nation as it celebrates its 59th year of independence.

The momentous victory in Ecuador, a first for any Guyanese boxer, male or female, at the prestigious tournament, has been hailed as a significant milestone for the country’s sporting history.

Jackman, who triumphed in the Women’s 81kg division, returned to a hero’s welcome on Saturday.

She was met at the airport by the Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, and the Vice-President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Dr. Marissa Parris.

Both lavished praise on the fighter for her “momentous achievement,” urging her to savour the historic win while challenging her to “work even harder to achieve more success at the highest level.”

The weight of Jackman’s achievement is considerable. Her commanding performance in Thursday evening’s final in Guayaquil saw her outclass local hope Daniela Espana.

She dominated every round to secure a unanimous decision from the judges.

This triumph turns her name into Guyanese sporting folklore and underscores her current scintillating form.

Earlier this year, Jackman was named Best Female Boxer at the Caribbean Boxing Championships in St. Lucia, signalling her rising prowess in the region.

Speaking on her historic win and its dedication, Jackman connected her triumph with the national pride accompanying the independence celebrations.

Her gesture has resonated deeply, offering a symbolic sporting gift to Guyana at a time of national reflection and ambition.

Jackman’s gold medal is only the second for Guyana at the AMBC Elite Championships, following Desmond Amsterdam’s bronze in 2022.

Her dominant victory in the 81kg category against a home fighter speaks volumes about her skill, composure, and relentless drive.
