Guyana’s boxing association (GBA) is set to boost its officiating ranks with a certification programme led by International Boxing Association (IBA) Three-Star Referee and Judge, James Beckles.
The Trinidadian, the highest-ranking official within the IBA, will conduct the course from May 29 to 31.
The GBA says the move aims to elevate the standard of refereeing and judging in Guyana, following a period of growth for the sport in the country.
GBA president Steve Ninvalle highlighted the importance of Beckles’ visit, coinciding with a rise in boxing talent, particularly among younger and elite amateur fighters.
“While we often focus on the boxers, the GBA is equally dedicated to developing all aspects of the sport,” said Ninvalle.
“Mr Beckles’ presence and leadership of this programme is a vital step in ensuring we maintain international standards both inside and outside the ring.
It’s crucial for the GBA to impact the entire sport, and this is especially important for the development of boxing in Guyana.”
The three-day programme will combine theory with practical experience.
A national boxing tournament, running from May 30 to June 1, will provide a platform for participants to be assessed live under Beckles’ supervision.
Guyana has recently celebrated international success, with Abiola Jackman becoming the nation’s first gold medallist at the AMBC Elite Championships. Ninvalle attributes this achievement to the GBA’s development structure and commitment to international exposure.
Currently, Guyana has one IBA Three-Star coach, Sebert Blake, following the passing of Terrence Poole (MS), who also held that elite status. The GBA believes that adding more highly qualified officials is crucial for building on the country’s boxing heritage.
“Our boxers deserve the best possible support, and that includes competent, certified officials,” Ninvalle added. “With Mr Beckles’ support, we’re not just improving officiating; we’re investing in the future of boxing in Guyana.”
The GBA insists its ambitions extend beyond the ring, aiming to ensure all bouts are governed with fairness, expertise, and world-class standards.
