UG probes allegations against lecturer after parent complaint

The University of Guyana (UG) has launched an investigation following a complaint posted on Facebook by a parent of a student about the conduct of a lecturer identified only as Ms. Reid, a Jamaican national.

The issue came to light after the parent Yoshev Elazar Mikael, posted his concerns on Facebook which has since garnered dozens of comments and shares.

“I find myself grappling with a troubling situation regarding my child, who is currently attending the University of Guyana. As a single parent, I have poured my heart and soul into providing for them, making countless sacrifices along the way. It is disheartening to see a lecturer seemingly wielding undue power over my child’s academic future,” Mikael wrote.

“Ms. Reid, a Jamaican instructor at our University of Guyana, has made dismissive comments about our students, suggesting they should have completed CAPE exams before enrolling, allegedly. Her approach feels disrespectful and unfair, as it undermines the efforts and capabilities of the young minds she is meant to nurture,” Mikael continued.

His post further claimed that students who reported Ms. Reid’s behaviour to higher authorities were allegedly met with insults.

“Recently, her behavior has raised considerable concern among the students, prompting them to report her to higher authorities. Instead of addressing their grievances professionally, Ms. Reid chose to berate and insult the students, leaving them feeling disheartened and disrespected, allegedly. This situation is incredibly troubling for me as a parent, as it impacts not only my child’s education but also their emotional well-being,” Mikael said.

Another parent, Donella Britton Shamsudeen commented that her own son had withdrawn from the course.

““My son withdrew with the aim of doing it in the summer because it was the only course messing with his GPA. I encourage them as a group to seek help from other lecturers to reach out to her. They were very frustrated,” Shamsudeen wrote.

In response, UG’s official Facebook page commented under Mikael’s post for clarity on the matter and also promised to conduct an investigation.

“The University of Guyana has taken note of a social media post which alleges certain behaviours by a named lecturer of a particular course. The University has triggered the necessary procedures which ensure that, if the allegations are proven to be factual, the prescribed actions will be taken accordingly,” UG wrote.

UG further reminded that both its administrative and academic staff are expected to adhere strictly to the University’s Code of Conduct for staff.

“It would be most unfortunate if the sterling behaviour of most of our dedicated faculty is brought into disrepute by the alleged actions of an errant few,” UG stated.
