Guyana to host Inter-Guiana Games from December 5-7

Guyana has been confirmed as the host nation for the 54th edition of the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG), which are scheduled to take place from December 5th to 7th.

The announcement was made by Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, on Thursday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ExxonMobil U-14 School Football tournament launch, Ninvalle revealed the dates for the longstanding youth multi-sport event, which traditionally features Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

He indicated that the schools’ football tournament could serve as a crucial proving ground for young talents hoping to represent Guyana at the Games.

“Players from the said tournament will likely feature for Guyana IGG,” Ninvalle highlighted, underscoring the developmental pathway the Games provide for the nation’s budding athletes.

The Director of Sport confirmed that both traditional participating territories, Suriname and French Guiana, are expected to compete.

However, the final list of sports disciplines to be contested will be determined in the upcoming months following discussions with the neighbouring countries.

At the 53rd edition of the Games, held in French Guiana in 2023, Guyana was represented by a contingent of nearly 150 athletes.

The event featured competition across seven disciplines: athletics, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Chess, Futsal, Swimming, and Table Tennis. A similar array of sports could be anticipated for the December event in Guyana.

First held in 1967, the Inter-Guiana Games have been an annual fixture in the region’s sporting calendar, fostering friendly rivalry and providing a platform for young athletes to gain international experience.
