Guyana endured another heavy defeat in the ongoing Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, losing 9-0 to host Costa Rica on Sunday evening at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela.
It was Guyana’s second defeat in as many games in Group A, following an 8-0 loss to USA.
Sheika Scott converted from the penalty spot for Costa Rica in the fifth and 22nd minutes before striking a header off a corner kick in the 25th to collect her hat-trick.
Emma Azofeifa extended the lead for the hosts in the 29th with a right-footed strike from the outside edge of the box. Scott struck again in the 45’+6’ to collect her fourth goal of the day.
Lucía Paniagua opened her account in the 63rd to continue the scoring in the second half. Daniela Ocampo struck from long distance in the 84th before Azofeifa collected her brace in the 90’+3’.
Scott added a fifth to her tally in the 90’+5’ to put a bow on the victory and thrust herself into the lead in the top scorer race.
Guyana’s final game of the group is against Puerto Rico on Tuesday (June 3).
In the earlier group game on Sunday, USA defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 to notch up a second win and book their spot in the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
