Guyana Golf Association to host national junior championship on July 3

Press Release from the Guyana Golf Association/Nexgen Golf Academy

What began as a small pilot programme during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 has now become arguably the most successful youth sports initiative in the country.

Just four years ago, the Guyana Golf Association (GGA) and Nexgen Golf Academy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, introduced golf into six secondary schools as a test programme.

At the time, only GGA President Aleem Hussain believed in the long-term potential of the initiative.

Today, that vision has transformed into a national success story.

With steadfast support from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Guyana Tourism Authority, and long-time individual and corporate sponsors, golf is now the fastest-growing sport in Guyana.

Thousands of students across the country participate in the sport during their Physical Education classes, and this year, over 350 students took golf as an elective at the CSEC examinations.

This results of this programme will be on full display at the Nexgen Golf Academy on Woolford Avenue on Wednesday, July 3, when the Guyana Golf Association, Nexgen Golf Academy and the Ministry of Education host the Third Annual National Junior Golf Championship.

The championship will see 350 participants from six regions, solidifying golf’s rightful place as a national sport in Guyana.

“We’ve come a long way, and it’s thanks to the relentless efforts of our team, combined with the amazing support from both government agencies and corporate Guyana,” said GGA President Aleem Hussain.

Defending champions Leguan Secondary School from Region Three will aim to make history by winning a third consecutive national title, but strong competition is expected from other school teams and regions who are prepared to deny them.

This year’s tournament will also have a CPCE Teachers Competition.

The year’s event has been made possible with support from the following: ExxonMobil Guyana, Ministry of Education, Guyana Tourism Authority, Regal Stationery and Computer Centre, Sunshine Snacks, Guyana Beverages, Sterling Products Limited, Shangri-La Gardens, Praetorian Security Services, University of Guyana’s Vice-Chancellor Paloma Mohamed, Toolsie Persaud Limited, Trophy Stall, TMK 2000 Inc., MovieTowne Guyana, Telco Solutions and Mobile Advertising, Pegasus Hotel annd Suites, Captain Gerry Gouveia (Roraima Airways), Dustin Spivey, TriStone Auto and the Edward B. Beharry Group of Companies.

There is no cost attached to participation and all players will receive meals, snacks and beverages, and through the assistance of Police Commissioner Clifford Hicken, transportation will be provided for competitors from Regions Two, Three, Five and Six.
