Karran Sukhan, a 25-year-old businessman from Lot 143 Number 2 Village East Canje, Berbice, has been granted bail following his remand for abusing his partner, 20-year-old Joanna Ramator.
Sukhan appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrates Court on Monday before Magistrate Michelle Matthias. He was granted bail set at $30,000 for the charge of threatening language, another $30,000 for threatening behavior, and $50,000 for assault causing actual bodily harm.
As part of his bail conditions, Sukhan must lodge his passport and maintain a distance of 50 feet from Joanna. Additionally, he is required to report to the Mibicuri Police Station every Friday.
Berbice man remanded for domestic violence against partner
Joanna bravely took to Facebook to share her harrowing experience in the relationship, which began in October 2018 and quickly devolved into violence by 2019. She detailed the severe abuse she suffered, which included being kicked in the stomach, stomped on the head, and beaten repeatedly. Joanna recounted multiple violent episodes, including assaults while she was holding their newborn, all while living in fear and concealing the abuse from her family.
When she expressed her desire to leave Sukhan, he retaliated with threats, brandishing a knife and cutlass against her and their children. Despite filing numerous police reports, Joanna found little support, even facing insensitive comments from law enforcement regarding her situation.
Following Joanna’s powerful Facebook post, an investigation was initiated, which led to Sukhan’s arrest in Region Five.
He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 21st.
