Feroze Bhagwandin, a prisoner on remand for murder, was found hanging and unresponsive in the washroom of Lusignan Prison on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement from the Guyana Prison Service.
Prison officers raised an alarm and rendered assistance, but Bhagwandin was later pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Police and prison authorities have launched an investigation, while a post-mortem examination is expected next week to ascertain the cause of death.
“There were no prior concerns for his welfare,” the Officer-in-Charge of Lusignan Prison stated, adding that support will be offered to Bhagwandin’s family.
