Police have arrested 19-year-old Junior Linton, known as ‘Butter’, in connection with an early-morning armed robbery in Albouystown that left a 61-year-old man beaten and robbed of $30,000 in cash.
The incident occurred at about 05:00 hrs on Thursday along Hogg Street, Albouystown. Reports indicate that the victim, Yasmin Mohamed, a labourer, was riding his electric bicycle north along Hogg Street on his way to buy breakfast at the La Penitence Market when he was accosted by Linton.
The suspect, armed with a cutlass, reportedly grabbed Mohamed, pulling him off the bicycle and causing him to fall to the ground. He then reached into the elderly man’s pants pocket and took the cash before using the cutlass to beat him about the body.
Linton fled the scene but was captured on CCTV footage. Acting on the footage, police ranks tracked him down later the same day at a ‘Guess House’ on Hogg Street, where he was found in possession of the cutlass used in the attack.
The suspect, who is unemployed and resides at Grove, East Bank Demerara, remains in police custody as investigations continue.
