Family wants justice for teen killed in Bel Air hit-and-run accident

The family of 16-year-old Kimberley Jones, who lived at Lot 63, Number 22 Village, Bel Air, West Coast Berbice, is seeking justice following her tragic accident.

On Tuesday, around 21:20 hrs, Kimberley was crossing the Bel Air Public Road from north to south. At that moment, a car identified as PAF 2130 and driven by 32-year-old Paul Mahabal from Montrose, East Coast Demerara, was travelling west along the southern side of the road when its front right side struck Kimberley. The impact caused her to be thrown 74 feet before she came to a stop.

Kimberley’s sister, Keiola Doris, told reporters that her sister was returning home from her job at Big B’s Restaurant when the incident occurred.

Keiola recounted that she was at home when she received the news, and by the time she arrived at the scene, Kimberley had already been taken to Fort Wellington Public Hospital. She mentioned that about 15 minutes later, a doctor informed her that Kimberley had lost a significant amount of blood and had unfortunately passed away.

Based on her observations, Keiola noted that Kimberley appeared to have suffered a broken neck and head injuries.

“Most likely the car was speeding. The way I see that car, it’s a hard knock,” she said.

Kimberley was a former student of Fort Wellington Secondary School, having recently completed the May/June CXC examinations, in which she sat nine subjects and was awaiting her results.

“I want justice for my sister. She so young, she didn’t live her life. All she wanted to do was work for her own money,” she stated.

According to the police, the driver of the car, who fled the accident scene, has been arrested and is currently in custody cooperating with the investigation.
