Almost 900 e-tickets issued from Jan. to May – Hicken

For the first five months of 2025, a total of 889 e-tickets were issued through the new automated electric ticketing system, Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken said on Friday.

Through the real-time traffic monitoring and data driven intervention, Hicken affirmed that the system has “significantly” improved drivers compliance to the laws when using the roadways. Still, hundreds of tickets were issued.

“Between January and May, 2025, 889 e-tickets were issued through the Safe Road Intelligence Safety System, a reflection of enhanced enforcement and smarter policing,” Hicken said while addressing the Guyana Police Force 186th Anniversary Awards Ceremony held at the Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary.

The automated system, officially launched on April 7, 2025, currently operates at ten locations. It was developed primarily to monitor speeding. However, it also detects a range of other offences, including tinted windows, coloured lights, and failure to wear seat belts.

The system is calibrated by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) and is supported by recent amendments to the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.

Despite increased compliance, Hicken lamented that road fatalities continue.

Meanwhile, the Top Cop also outlined that significant investments made in the Force. This includes the additional of 693 vehicles to its fleet over the past five years and the deployment of  5,048 body cameras to front line ranks to improve accountability during public interaction with traffic stops.

Along with decentralised service to all regions, Hicken added that Police outposts were upgraded and equipped in both riverine and hinterland communities across regions with internet connectivity. Drone surveillance was also introduced in certain areas.
