Former President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwyn King, has been given a 19 year prison sentence after he was found guilty of raping a female child, following a trial at the High Court in Georgetown last month.
The sentencing was handed down in the High Court on Thursday morning. King, 61, represented himself.
On June 26, 2025, a 12-member jury unanimously found King guilty of two counts of rape, stemming from incidents that occurred in April 2021.
The court heard that the first assault took place at night when no one else was present, while the second occurred in the afternoon, again in isolation.
The case was presided over by Justice Simone Morris, with the prosecution led by State Counsels Muntaz Ali and Geneva Wills. During the trial, King was represented by Attorney-at-Law Tonza Sarrabo.
King previously faced a similar rape charge in 2009, but was acquitted by a jury in 2016 following a trial at the High Court.
