Gun found in bag of rice at Parfaite Harmonie home

Police on the West Bank of Demerara are investigating the discovery of an unlicensed firearm found hidden in a rice bag at the home of a 52-year-old Social Worker in West Minster, Parfaite Harmonie.

The discovery was made around 17:30 hrs today after the woman contacted the police upon finding the weapon.

According to initial reports, ranks from the Parfaite Harmonie Police Station responded promptly to the woman’s home, where they conducted a search and uncovered a .32 revolver wrapped in a black plastic bag, concealed inside a rice bag.

Investigations revealed that around 19:30 hrs on Wednesday, the Social Worker’s aunt brought the rice bag — which was already opened and contained about half a bag of rice — to her home. The rice was intended to be used as dog food.

It was only today, while reaching into the bag to get rice for the dogs, that the woman found the hidden firearm and immediately summoned the police.

The revolver was seized, marked, sealed, and lodged at the Parfaite Harmonie Police Station.

The woman’s aunt has since been contacted and is being questioned as investigations continue.
