Hire car driver remanded over Line Path fatal hit-and-run accident

A hire car driver was charged and remanded to prison on Thursday after being implicated in a fatal hit-and-run accident on the public road at Line Path, Corentyne Berbice

Avinash Naidoo, 32, of Lot 1105 Section ‘B’ Line Path Village, stood before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Springlands Magistrates Court.

It is alleged that on March 2nd, 2025, Naidoo operated motorcar HC 8990 in a dangerous manner on the Line Path Public Road, leading to the tragic deaths of nine-month-old Surita Surujnarine and 19-year-old Kavita Bedsan. He faces two indictable charges related to their deaths, although he was not required to enter a plea at this stage.

In addition, Naidoo was charged with three counts of failing to render assistance to Surita, Kavita, and her father, 17-year-old Tushan Surujnarine. He pleaded not guilty to these charges, as well as to another charge of failing to report the accident to the police within 24 hours and for failing to stop after the incident.

In his bail application, Naidoo’s attorney, Vinnay Ponwa, asserted that his client is prepared to surrender his passport and comply with any reporting requirements imposed by the court, maintaining his client’s innocence throughout the proceedings.

However, Police Prosecutor Corporal Whitney Yearwood objected to bail, emphasizing that Naidoo has been evading law enforcement since the incident.

Prosecutor Yearwood explained that Naidoo was driving at a high speed when he collided with the rear of an electric bike with the family, traveling in the same direction and that he fled the scene without stopping.

She highlighted that Naidoo later attempted to conceal himself at a friend’s residence and was apprehended by police on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025.

After considering the arguments from both sides, Magistrate Hardy cited the bail Act and decisively denied bail to Naidoo. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 31st.
