Over the next five years, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has major plans for Region Ten (Upper Demerara – Upper Berbice), according to President Dr Irfaan Ali, who on Sunday evening delivered a passionate address to residents in Linden.
The President said his government will upgrade the Linden airstrip to a proper regional facility, invest in concrete drains to prevent flooding, support a tourism expansion plan and investment strategy for the region, and develop a modern servicing and engineering sector.
“These are the facts. This is the reality. When you vote on the 1st of September, you are voting for a strong, stable, and secure future with the People’s Progressive Party,” he told residents gathered at the party’s re-election campaign rally on Sunday evening.

The President also noted that his government will work on upgrading the country’s financial laws to improve access to financial services for riverain communities.
“We are going to modernise our central bank laws and approach to banking. We are going to expand the range of financial services for the people in Region 10. Whether you are in the river, here in Linden, or anywhere else in the country, you have a right to access financial services from where you are,” he stated.
Dr Ali spoke about upgrading bridges and road infrastructure in the region, along with investment in value-added initiatives in the bauxite sector.

Bauxite mining is a major form of livelihood for residents of the region.
“It’s not only about new production—any bauxite company talking to us now about expansion must be ready to invest in value creation and value-added initiatives, so more jobs can be created here in Linden… We are going to maximise investment opportunities in bauxite,” he said.
He promised that, once re-elected, the administration will further invest in expanding livestock and cash crop farming, redevelop and enhance the Mackenzie and Wismar markets, expand access to government services, increase the manufacturing sector, build an oncology hospital, and work on reducing the cost of living in the region.

He explained that the projects to be implemented in the new term of office stemmed from consultations with communities, including those located along the Upper Demerara and Berbice Rivers. To bring these projects to fruition, he said, it is important to retain a majority in the National Assembly.
“We are a party about vision, about plans, about strategy… You are voting for an overwhelming majority in Parliament so we can invest in these things,” he told supporters.
“I promise you tonight that we will deliver on every one of these in every village, but I want every one of you to ensure that you deliver this region to the PPP to make it easier for us to do it,” he added.
Some of the direct requests included the maintenance of the rivers. The President said equipment will be purchased and given to villages to commence work. He also committed to the hosting of farmers’ markets so that producers can sell their goods directly.
For those young people who may have shifted their support to other political parties, the President said, “It is not too late” to endorse the PPP/C and vote to improve their standard of living.
He also promised to transfer resources to religious organisations to enable them to play a more active role in improving society.
“My friends, the choice is clear. That choice is about your future, that choice is about the best possible Region 10… that choice is about the implementation of your priorities. We have shown you that you can trust us, we have shown you our level of commitment—and on the 1st of September, together we will show all of Guyana that we want this.”
