President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that there will be more tax cuts in the coming years once the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is re-elected for a second term in office.
The President outlined a suite of plans the PPP/C will implement in the next five years during a public meeting in Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, on Monday night. Included in those plans are more initiatives to support vulnerable groups, community development projects, and relief measures.
And tax cuts, he vowed, are a key focus because the PPP/C wants to guarantee that citizens have more disposable income.
“In the next five years, it is the further removal of taxes and putting more money back in the pockets of people,” the Guyanese Head of State told ECD residents.
These public meetings are being held ahead of the September 1, 2025, General and Regional Elections. And on the campaign trail, the President has already announced specific tax cuts. The removal of taxes on All-Terrain Vehicles and boat engines for additional categories of use, for example, was announced at a public meeting in Moruca, Region One, on July 19.
And the promised tax cuts come amid the removal of hundreds of taxes, from water and electricity to those in productive sectors. This was something the President boasted about, emphasising that the PPP/C promised to remove onerous taxes and did so once it took control of government in 2020.
So the President pitched the party as the one capable of leading Guyana well.
“It is between a plan, implemented by people who are tried and tested… or risking all of that to individuals and groups who are in this for themselves,” President Ali said.
