President Ali unveils plan to construct 30,000 houses in five years

President Dr Irfaan Ali on Thursday night revealed that the government intends to construct a minimum of 30,000 new houses with 16 homes being delivered every single day once the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is re-elected to office on September 1, 2025.

Each house will be valued at $15 million, amounting to an overall investment of $450 billion while creating an estimated 150,000 jobs.

“We are looking at a minimum of 30,000 homes that we want to be constructed in the next five years, because we are moving from land ownership to home ownership,” President Ali announced on Thursday night while addressing the opening ceremony of Building Expo 2025 at the national stadium in Providence, East Bank Demerara.

The initiative, he said, marks a shift from merely allocating lands to ensuring full home ownership.

“Understanding the scale and scope of what is ahead of us tells us about the necessity of this building expo.

“It gives the private sector, the contractors and the builders an understanding as to the scale of opportunity that is ahead of us and the scale of input that is required from us in the coming five years,” President Ali said.

The programme will utilise lands already allocated to citizens. According to President Ali, such a scale of the housing drive means a significant economic boost.

“I am talking simply about homes…16 homes per day. An average of five persons will be working to build a single home, thereby providing 150,000 jobs,” Dr Ali said.

Over the past five years, the government has allocated nearly 53,000 house lots, thereby surpassing its 50,000 target.

This year’s Building Expo features more than 380 booths, including international companies from Suriname, Colombia, the United States, India, and the Dominican Republic.

The event is set to showcase Guyana’s investments across multiple sectors, foster new partnerships, and lay the foundation for the next wave of national development. Building Expo 2025 is being held from August 14-17 at the Guyana National Stadium.
