Carnegie, Education Ministry to provide CVQ certification to trainees

A recently inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Education and the Carnegie School of Home Economics (CSHE) paves the way for persons trained by the institution to reciprocate Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) certification.

Principal of the school, Sharmaine Marshal on Friday told the News Room this agreement will improve the quality of education offered, creating better opportunities for employment.

It will work by having persons enrolled in the garment construction and commercial food preparation training programmes trained at the Beterverwagting Practical Instructional Centre (PIC). This Centre is equipped to provide state-of-the-art workshop resources, therefore providing the students with relevant competencies and skills to attain the internationally recognised certificate.

“By doing this we are able to provide students with access to advanced tools and equipment, ensuring that they get very hands-on experience that is very vital in these areas,” the Principal said.

This collaboration will see the CSHE offering CVQ Level One certification for the two programmes. The Education Ministry, through the Government of Guyana, invested $225 million into the construction of the Centre at Beterverwagting.

Importantly, Marshal said prior to this agreement, the school provided training in a traditional setting. Persons completed the programmes with a certificate from the school but now, they will receive the two certificates. This part of efforts to support the Government of Guyana’s objectives of strengthening the country’s human resource capacity by creating avenues of training and development.

“We are moving towards offering a more competency based education and training so that the students are more experienced and hons-on and ready to meet the job market.

“The qualification received is recognized not only in Guyana but throughout the Caribbean. In doing this the Carnegie School of Home Economics stands to support the government’s strategic vision to enhance the tourism and hospitality sector,” Marshal said.

This comprehensive initiative is expected to significantly improve employability and reduce unemployment by providing persons with the skills and qualifications needed to succeed in various industries.
