APNU now promises free house lots for applicants earning less than $400,000 monthly

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), the main political opposition, announced on Wednesday that it would give free house lots to applicants earning less than $400,000 monthly.

This promise was shared in a graphic posted on Facebook by the party’s Vice Presidential candidate, Ganesh Mahipaul. Notably, this commitment is not included in the party’s official manifesto, which was launched last Friday.

Responding to questions posed by citizens, Mahipaul said standard lots are between 50 by 100 feet to 60 by 100 feet.

“You would find cases of some lots a little smaller and some a little bigger… the technical people (Land Surveyors) [play] a crucial role in the demarcation,” Mahipaul said on Facebook.

In the manifesto, specific initiatives for the housing sector include a faster application process for house lots, lowering the age of application from 21 to 18 years, and the introduction of a rent-to-own scheme wherein the APNU government will help persons build homes, and they will repay through affordable rent.

Other housing benefits the party promises include rent assistance for renters, mortgage assistance for persons with mortgages, and home repair and improvement grants.

APNU has made bold promises for the housing sector, but those commitments are marred by the party’s track record while in government from 2015 to 2020. The Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, under the incumbent People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) administration, Susan Rodrigues said the APNU+AFC coalition delivered 7,534 house lots over the five years, whereas the PPP distributed more than 50,000 lots since 2020.
