Ballot boxes secured after multi-vehicle accident at LBI

An accident involving a convoy transporting ballot boxes on the La Bonne Intention (LBI) public road, East Coast Demerara, has resulted in multiple injuries to staff of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and party agents.

Public Relations Officer of GECOM, Yolanda Ward, told the News Room that the GECOM convoy was heading to Georgetown from Berbice with ballot boxes when a private car allegedly did not heed the sirens and ended up in the path of the convoy.

Ward confirmed that the ballot boxes were not destroyed and were safely transported to the GECOM headquarters in Kingston, where they remain secured.

Ward said that the injured persons were taken to the hospital. Members of the Disciplined Forces voted on Friday ahead of the September 1 polls. Polling stations closed at 18:00 hrs.
