Cue Sports Association hosts inaugural national 8-ball championship

In a landmark moment for cue sports in Guyana, the inaugural National 8-Ball Open Championship has officially begun, marking the country’s first ranking tournament ever to be held.

Organised by Cue Sports Association (Guyana) Inc., the event promises to elevate the standard of 8-ball play locally.

Players vie for crucial ranking points that will contribute to their standings at the end of the year.

The tournament has drawn an impressive field of 64 competitors, showcasing the game’s growing popularity. Due to time constraints, entry was capped at this number, ensuring a competitive atmosphere throughout the event.

Players will engage in a thrilling double-elimination format, guaranteeing that even a loss does not immediately eliminate them from contention.

The championship, which will last three weekends, commenced last Sunday. Matches took place at two bustling venues: Sunil and Son Pool Bar and Suraj Sports Bar.

Over 60 matches were played, concluding the first and second rounds and setting the stage for the knockout phases.

The stakes are high as the tournament progresses. The prize pool is substantial, and the winner will receive a remarkable $150,000.

The runner-up will receive $75,000, while third and fourth-place finishers will each receive $40,000.

Additionally, players finishing in fifth through eighth place will not leave empty-handed, with each receiving $10,000.

The excitement will peak on Monday, February 24, when the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals will be held.

One Communications is the championship sponsor, with supporting contributions from Caribbean Motor Sports Guyana and Stag Beer.

As the tournament unfolds, it promises to crown a champion and pave the way for the future of 8-ball in Guyana, inspiring a new generation of players to take up the cue.
