Couple among three arrested over armed robbery at Success supermarket

Police arrested three persons, including a couple, after they allegedly stormed a Success, East Coast Demerara Chinese supermarket and carried out a brazen robbery.

The suspects in custody are Cleveland Cross, a 28-year-old construction worker, 25-year-old Orwin Smith, and his girlfriend, Showana Sobers.

The News Room was informed that ranks arrested Cross at his Graham Street, Plaisance, ECD house hours after the robbery which took place at LQ supermarket on Friday night.

While at the location, the News Room was told that ranks conducted a search in Cross’s bedroom, and several items, including several cellular phones and a ski mask, were found.

When questioned, he reportedly admitted to the crime. He related that he also had some phone cards from the robbery which he sold. He was taken into custody.

Subsequently, Smith and Sobers were arrested at Prince William Street, Plaisance.

Smith was allegedly found in possession of a handgun. An undisclosed amount of cash was also found in his bedroom. The cash was part of the loot from the robbery.

The persons arrested remain in custody as the investigation continues.
