Asgar Ramirez, a 25-year-old resident of Duke Street, Kingston, died on Sunday after the car he was driving collided with a lorry parked at Yarrowkabra along the Soesdyke/ Linden Highway.
Police Headquarters said the accident happened around 20:30 hrs Sunday. It involved motor lorry #GAG 5478 which was driven by 31-year-old Anthony Vriese and motor car #PRR 7155, driven by Ramirez.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the car was traveling north along the western side of the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, at a fast rate. Ramirez reportedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with the rear of the lorry, which was parked on the western side of the road and facing north.
The lorry was parked there because it experienced mechanical problems at approximately 16:30 hrs Sunday. This was reported to the Highway Patrol Base, and Police Officers were the scene. They secured the area by placing reflective cones around the rear, sides, and front of the lorry. At the time of the collision, Vriese and other individuals were at the side of the lorry, attempting to repair it.
The collision resulted in extensive damage to both vehicles. Ramirez sustained severe head injuries and other bodily injuries. He was later extracted from the motor car in an unconscious state by Police Officers and members of the public and taken to the to Diamond Hospital, where a doctor examined him and pronounced him dead.
The body was subsequently transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, pending a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Vriese is in custody assisting with the investigation.
