With enhanced police resources and widespread community engagements, the crime rate is down along with traffic accidents in Region One (Barima-Waini).
This was revealed by Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Krishnadat Ramana, during an interview on Radio Eve Leary this week.
“When we look comparatively at our crime [rate] this year compared to last year we have a reduction of 25 per cent which I would say is excellent. Our traffic also when compared to last year we have a 50 per cent decrease in traffic accidents,” Commander Ramana revealed as he noted the division has seen continuous improvement.
“These things don’t happen just like that, it is strategies we are working with and the division, the ranks they work as a team and not individually,” Commander Ramana said.

Ramana noted that improved resources have contributed to the division’s success.
“I can say proudly, we are not starved for resources here. This was probably one of the major issues some time ago, before my time here as the commander. But I can proudly say at each police station and outpost, we are having transportation so we can address the needs of the public.”
He also highlighted efforts in riverain communities that would seldom see police due to locations and accessibility.
“We have some riverain areas for example Imbotero, Santa Cruz, Moruca – those areas, we have new boats, engines, and we would patrol the river areas,” the commander said.
Praising efforts by police in the region to engage with the public and communities, Ramana highlighted that three or four times monthly the outreaches are held.
“Police presence is always being felt, no matter what area in Region One, whether it is by river or by land, we go there,” he stated.
But it is not just Guyanese living in the region that are receiving support, as Ramana said the police is also actively involved in migrant areas.
“We have also looked at the areas where we have a number of migrants, approximately 3,000 living here and we are also looking at their condition to help improve their condition,” the commander said.
