G/Town Mayor to present action plan to manage city drainage soon

An action plan expected to help address the challenge of prolonged flooding during rainy seasons in Georgetown will be completed, presented and moved to implementation soon.

Mayor of Georgetown, Alfred Mentore on Thursday, during an interview with the News Room said the City Engineer is compiling the information which will take into consideration. The work being done by Central Government, for projects to be implemented. This plan will address areas that are clogged as well as areas that have not been addressed under the Central Government’s portfolio.

“I think the collaboration between what Central Government has been doing through the NDIA (National Drainage and Irrigation Authority) and some extent, the Ministry of Public Works, he is supposed to get up those information.

“With the support of what they do and what we will do, we should be able to bring more relief to the citizens,” Mentore said.

Each year as the rainy season approaches, the Government of Guyana formulates a comprehensive strategy to prepare for possible flooding in areas.

In April, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo said the Mayor and City Council is failing to deliver on its basic duties. Dr Jagdeo also mentioned the lack of financial statements presented by the City Council.

As such, the Central Government has stepped in with a taskforce to address garbage woes. Garbage often blocks drains, making it harder for water to recede.

Mentore, however, assured residents that the council will be able to carry out its duties when the action plan is presented.

“This council is a not a broke place…we have enough resources, as long we could generate those resources and budget accordingly, we honour our obligation,” he said.
