Quick action by firefighters averted disaster in New Amsterdam

Firefighters from the New Amsterdam Fire Station demonstrated outstanding efficiency on Thursday, successfully preventing a major disaster when they swiftly responded to a building fire.

At approximately 8:50 hrs, the Fire Service received an urgent call reporting flames at Lot 4 Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

At the scene Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald told the media that two fire tenders were immediately dispatched.

Upon arrival, the firefighters found the upper flat of the building heavily engulfed in flames. Thanks to their prompt and decisive actions, they effectively contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other areas of the structure. Notably, the lower flat sustained no damage.

Reports indicate that five individuals occupied the building; fortunately, no one was present when the fire erupted.

Residents in the vicinity praised the Fire Service’s rapid response, emphasizing their strategic location just a stone’s throw away and their role in saving the property.

McDonald stated that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
