Gov’t to outline ‘vision for the future’ as Guyana celebrates 59th Independence anniversary

Guyana will celebrate its 59th Independence anniversary on Monday, and Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, said outlining the government’s vision for the country’s development will be a key part of the celebrations.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali will give the customary independence address in Albion, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne); Jagdeo said this is part of the government’s commitment to take the national celebration to a different region each year.

In his address, the President is expected to outline the People’s Progressive Party Civic’s (PPP/C) vision for Guyana’s development.

“We believe that it is important to paint that picture for the people of the country, to lay out the vision for the future, support that vision with well-laid-out plans and programmes

“You’re going to hear our vision for broad-based economic expansion that will then yield the benefits to support the development needs of our people,” Jagdeo said at his weekly press conference.

Aspects of the vision that will be detailed, according to Jagdeo, include the government’s homeownership push; an expansion of benefits for children, elderly persons, and persons with disabilities; the development of a digital society; job creation; and bridging the divide between the coast and the hinterland.

“Of course, the most important thing of all, (we will speak about) bringing people together, across race, religion, and gender.

“These are important things we will talk about because they matter to the people of this country,” Jagdeo added.

Other government ministers, who will lead other Independence celebrations in other regions, will also speak about this vision.
