G/town Explosions: Minibus driver arrested, vehicle used to transport perpetrators detained

Investigators probing the explosions at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost and the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) substation in Georgetown have arrested a local minibus driver and detained a vehicle which was reportedly used to transport the three men believed to be involved.

This was confirmed by Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, who told the News Room that detectives are actively pursuing three foreign nationals involved in the crime.

Two of the suspects are Spanish-speaking individuals. The News Room was told the investigators are making earnest efforts to confirm their nationality. The third suspect, who goes by the alias “Flavio Tasso,” is a Brazilian.

The “Spanish speakers” are said to be the principal offenders of the explosions.

The News Room was told that investigators have evidence, including that gathered from CCTV footage, linking the suspects to the explosions.

Police on Tuesday issued wanted bulletins for the three suspects, who they said are wanted for “terrorism.”

The News Room understands that as the investigation widens, the minibus driver was arrested. He reportedly assisted the suspects with renting rooms at a hotel in the Stevedore Housing Scheme, Georgetown.

Tasso reportedly told the minibus driver, when he introduced him to the “Spanish speaking” suspects, that the men came here to “do bad things.”

Additionally, the vehicle, which was used to transport the suspects to the scene, was detained by investigators.

Police Headquarters has been investigating the explosions at the outpost and the substation. It was previously reported that the gate of the East Ruimveldt Police outpost was blown off after an improvised explosive device was thrown at the facility by unknown individuals.

Police said the two incidents occurred around the same time on Saturday, May 17. So, authorities said they were investigating the possibility of a coordinated effort between the two incidents.
