Police are investigating an early morning robbery and murder that claimed the life of 70-year-old Deonarine, a male pensioner, at his Lusignan Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara home on Wednesday.
According to investigators, the incident occurred around 3:30 hrs at the one-storey wooden home where Deonarine lived with his reputed wife, a 69-year-old fellow pensioner. The assailants are believed to be two men dressed entirely in black with their faces concealed by ski masks.
The wife recounted that she woke around 1:30 hrs to begin her morning chores in the kitchen. After returning from the washroom, where she had left the hallway door open, she was confronted by the masked intruders. One of the suspects reportedly choked her while the other bound her hands and feet before locking her inside the washroom.
She later heard Deonarine calling out for her, followed by the sound of a struggle. When the commotion subsided, she managed to free herself and discovered her husband lying motionless in the hallway. She immediately contacted her brother, who alerted the police.
Ranks arrived on the scene at approximately 6:30 hrs. A search of the premises revealed that GY$800,000 in cash had been stolen — $500,000 from under a bed and $300,000 from a black bag in the bedroom.
While Deonarine’s body showed no visible signs of violence, investigators collected DNA swabs from his hands as part of ongoing forensic analysis. His body has since been taken to Memorial Gardens Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is pending.
Police are actively pursuing leads to locate the suspects as the investigation continues.
