From GOAL to UG, thousands of ‘future leaders’ trained in the last five years – Jagdeo

The government has invested heavily in the training of thousands of persons who are now better positioned to contribute to Guyana’s future development, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said on Thursday.

Jagdeo spoke at a People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) press conference, just days after another large set of students graduated from various certificate and degree programmes part of the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL).

He described GOAL as a major achievement for the PPP government, training nearly 40,000 individuals in less than five years. He also reminded reporters that the government aimed to provide scholarships to about 20,000 persons when the academy was conceptualised.

$12.9 billion invested in GOAL scholarships so far

Beyond GOAL, about 13,000 persons were trained at the University of Guyana in five years. Now, tertiary education- which includes UG studies- has been made free of cost nationally. And this venture, Jagdeo said, further evidences the government’s support for upskilling and supporting the population.

Thousands more got government support through the Board of Industrial Training (about 13,000 individuals were trained) and the Women’s Innovation and Investment Network programmes (about 17,000 persons were trained.”

Altogether, Jagdeo described the beneficiaries as Guyana’s future leaders and expressed much pride that citizens capitalised on the education opportunities presented to them.

“We’re talking about 83,000 people who’ve undergone some sort of training and all free, with the exception of those who paid cash for UG… That’s a massive number of people and it’s spread all over the country,” he highlighted.
