Even if talks resume with AFC, Norton will be Coalition’s presidential candidate – Ganesh Mahipaul

Even if talks resume with the Alliance for Change (AFC), Aubrey Norton will be the presidential candidate of a Coalition of APNU, which has the PNC as the main party.

This is according to PNC Central Executive Committee member Ganesh Mahipaul, who was the lead speaker at a press conference Friday.

“I am maintaining that my party, the People’s National Congress Reform, which is the largest stakeholder in the APNU coalition, has not shut the door on negotiations

“I am still optimistic that we can find common grounds, but what I am absolutely certain about is that the presidential candidate will be Aubrey Compton Norton of the People’s National Congress Reform…,” said Mahipaul.

AFC did not demand Presidential spot in coalition but withheld support for Norton – Hughes

The AFC had announced that it would not be going into a Coalition with APNU, but there have been indications that those talks could resume at any time. Norton is the leader of the PNC, which had decided that he would be the presidential candidate.

AFC leader Nigel Hughes has said the AFC favours a consensus candidate, but Mahipaul has said any candidate of the Coalition would be Norton.

Any decisions on a Coalition have to be made within a month’s time as the date for the submission of party lists of the Guyana Elections Commission is July 14, 2025.
