The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government has been focused on building and expanding necessary infrastructure all across the country but the party’s General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said new public transportation systems are being considered.
During his weekly press conference, Jagdeo reflected on the government’s heavy focus on building new highways and other roadways since taking office in 2020. Those investments, he said, were crucial to support the influx of vehicles on the roadways.
Cognisant of that influx, better traffic management systems such as those which involve the new speed cameras have been implemented. However, Jagdeo acknowledged that public transportation may require some attention too.
So he said the party is once again looking at a system it first mulled years ago. That system involves a light rail connection between Golden Grove and Diamond, where about 300,000 people reside.
That system could be complemented by an electric tram system in Central Georgetown, allowing people to travel through the city with ease.
“You can do that or you can develop parking outside the facility and use the rail to come in,” Jagdeo explained.
However, he stated that this system is “being looked at seriously but nothing has been finalised as yet.”
