Old Demerara Harbour Bridge could be used to connect Timehri, Sandhills

The existing Demerara Harbour Bridge could be moved downriver to connect Timehri, East Bank Demerara, to Sandhills, according to President Dr. Irfaan Ali.

“Right now, we have the engineers examining the possibility of moving the old Demerara Harbour Bridge downriver to connect Timehri to the Sandhills Road,” President Ali said at Monday’s commissioning ceremony of the new Ogle to Eccles Highway.

If that venture is feasible, he explained, another route to Guyana’s interior regions would be developed.

The government is forging ahead with the establishment of the new Demerara Harbour Crossing, a four-lane high-span structure that is expected to reduce traffic congestion when it is completed by August 31, 2025.

As construction of that bridge moves ahead, several options for the productive use of the existing floating bridge are being considered.
