Althia King, the young woman selected by A New and United Guyana (ANUG) to occupy its seat in the National Assembly during the last Parliament, has resigned from the party.
King made the announcement in a Facebook post on Wednesday evening.
“As of July 1st, I officially resigned from A New and United Guyana (ANUG),” she stated, adding that she has always kept leaders in the “loop” of any decisions, and this time was no different.
King did not make it into Parliament, due to the refusal of one of its partners – The New Movement – to vacate the seat and make way for ANUG in keeping with an agreement between those two parties and the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP).
In her Facebook post, King said she didn’t seek any position on ANUG’s executive during its recent internal elections. According to her, she needed to prioritise “personal matters” and completing her studies.
Her announcement, however, came less than five days after Ralph Ramkarran and Timothy Jonas, co-founders of ANUG, resigned from the party, just after it was announced that ANUG had joined forces with Azruddin Mohamed’s ‘We Invest in Nationhood’ (WIN).
In separate Facebook posts, both Ramkarran and Jonas said they resigned from the party, with Ramkarran noting that he informed the current party leader, Dr. Mark France, of his decision.
King said she was not on the party executive and had no vote in the decision to collaborate with WIN. However, the young politician said she is “happy to see ANUG collaborate with any third parties since that has always been part of our mantra.”
A signing ceremony between ANUG and WIN was held on Saturday at WIN’s Head Office, where Mohamed, who has been sanctioned by the US government, and ANUG leader, Dr. Mark France inked the agreement.
ANUG, Mohamed’s ‘WIN’ party join forces
Previously, Mohamed ruled out coalescing with other parties.
“We have the strength to win the elections on our own. We did a sample of about 80,000 persons throughout this country, we sampled, and we got 65% of the votes,” Mohamed told reporters at Georgetown Magistrates’ Court last month.
Like ANUG, the Alliance for Change (AFC) and the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have also been hit with numerous resignations over the past few months.
AFC, for its part, was rocked recently with the resignation of five of its youth leaders – including three Members of Parliament (MPs) – within the space of two weeks.
Similarly, the People’s National Congress (PNC)-led APNU has lost close to 10 senior members of the party, who have either defected to the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP), gone to the AFC, or formed parties of their own to contest the September 1 General and Regional Elections.
