President Dr. Irfaan Ali has officially dissolved Guyana’s 12th Parliament and all Regional Democratic Councils, paving the way for general and regional elections set for September 1, 2025.
The move was made official on Thursday when the Head of State signed two proclamations at State House, fulfilling his constitutional powers under the Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
“Free and fair elections are the lifeblood of a democratic state,” President Ali declared as he addressed the nation.
“The upcoming elections represent our country’s commitment to renewing the democratic covenant between its citizens and government,” he added.
The final sitting of the 12th Parliament took place on June 2, marking the end of a parliamentary cycle that President Ali had already signalled would close when he announced the election date during Independence Day celebrations on May 26.
Under Guyana’s Constitution, the President may dissolve Parliament at any time by proclamation. Once dissolved, the Constitution mandates that general elections must be held within three months — with the election date formally set by the President.
The President also used Thursday’s address to call on every eligible voter to play their part in shaping the nation’s future.

“I urge all Guyanese to participate in the upcoming elections and, in so doing, be part of this critical decision-making process of the state,” President Ali said.
Responsibility for administering the elections rests with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), which the President expressed confidence in to deliver free, fair and credible polls.
“I urge all Guyanese to support the work of GECOM,” he added.
Guyana now enters full election mode, with political parties gearing up for what promises to be a competitive campaign season.
