Covent Garden motorcyclist killed after run over by lorry

Police are investigating a tragic accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Thursday afternoon along the Covent Garden public road, East Bank Demerara.

Dead is 55-year-old Gerald Da Silva of Lot 10 Covent Garden, who was riding his motorcycle when he was struck and run over by a motor lorry.

The accident occurred around 16:05 hrs on the Eastern Carriageway and involved motor lorry #GAG 2043, driven by 23-year-old Richard Kevin Ghani of Alliance Road, Timehri, and Da Silva’s motorcycle, #CL 9379.

According to police, initial enquiries revealed that the lorry was travelling south along the eastern driving lane while Da Silva’s motorcycle was heading south on the western driving lane, just ahead of the lorry.

The lorry driver told investigators that as Da Silva approached a parked motor canter on the roadside, he swerved eastward to avoid it. The lorry driver said he tried to brake, but due to the short distance, the front right side of the lorry collided with the motorcycle.

Da Silva fell onto the road and was crushed by the right front and rear wheels of the lorry, suffering severe injuries to his head and body.

He was taken by police to the Diamond Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body has since been taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Police investigations are ongoing.
