GOA backs taekwando athlete Ceili Peterson for World University Games challenge

The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) has backed taekwondo athlete Ceili Peterson as she prepares to compete at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany.

Peterson, a rising star in Guyanese sport, is currently ranked among the top 20 in the world in her weight class.

Her participation in the prestigious multi-sport event, which kicked off on Wednesday across the Rhine-Ruhr region with Berlin as a host venue, underscores her commitment to excellence on the global stage.

She will be Guyana’s sole representative at the Games, competing in the Women’s Korugi event on Sunday, July 20th, at the Messe Essen Halle in Essen.

GOA President Godfrey Munroe and the Executive Committee lauded Peterson’s dedication to her sport and her country.

“We salute Ceili for her outstanding dedication and wish her success as she carries the national flag and embodies the values of Hard Work, Dedication, Commitment, Excellence, Friendship, and Respect at the FISU Games,” the GOA stated.

Peterson, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a Minor in Psychology from York University and is pursuing a Master’s in Sport Psychology, expressed her pride in representing Guyana.

“It is with deep gratitude I am proud and honoured to represent Guyana in Rhine-Ruhr at the 2025 FISU World University Games,” Peterson said.

“It means the world to compete on this global stage and to inspire boys and girls in Guyana to set big goals and pursue their athletic dreams.”

She offered advice to aspiring athletes: “Step beyond your comfort zone. Growth happens in challenges—set goals, work hard, and never stop improving.”

Peterson is accompanied in Germany by her coach, Yvette Yong.
