Six young Guyanese have been awarded Chinese Government Scholarships, with most set to pursue studies in the medical field.
This year’s recipients are Keron Williams, Makena Alleyne, Yudesh Persaud, Melissa Mickie, Robert Lee, and Serena Rambarran. Two of them will be studying at two of China’s top universities.
They received their scholarships on Monday during a ceremony held at the Chinese Embassy in Georgetown.
Delivering remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Yang Yang said the scholarship has become a “flagship initiative,” with nearly 100 Guyanese students benefiting in recent years.
“You have worked hard and now a new chapter of opportunity awaits you. Your success reflects not only your personal efforts but also the growing bond between our two nations,” the Ambassador told the recipients.

She described the scholars as “ambassadors of dialogue and mutual learning” between China and Guyana, adding, “You are the builders, contributors and advocates of the China-Guyana partnership.”
Ambassador Yang also highlighted that in 2024 alone, over 200 Guyanese professionals participated in short-term training in China across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and artificial intelligence.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narine Singh, said the ceremony was a celebration of “excellence, ambition and the deepening of partnership” between the two countries.
Speaking directly to the future doctors, he urged them to embrace their training.
“You carry with you not just the stethoscope… You are going to sharpen your skills and deepen your knowledge. You are going as ambassadors of Guyanese resilience, intellect and compassion,” Dr Singh said.
For recipient Keron Williams, who hails from the indigenous community of Port Kaituma, the scholarship is both personal and symbolic.
“From an early age, I dreamt of becoming a doctor,” he said, explaining that his ambition was shaped by witnessing the healthcare challenges in his region.
“This scholarship gives me a chance to study medicine in China and return equipped to serve the people of Guyana, especially those in remote areas like the one I am from,” Williams said.

“Academicall,y I want to excel, I want to be the best and I want to learn from some of the best minds in the field with cutting-edge technology,” she said.
While most recipients will enter the medical field, others will explore areas such as engineering.
