Residents of the hinterland regions are no longer limited when it comes to learning, according to Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.
She said that for the first time, many children can now complete their secondary education without leaving the community, a change she credited to sustained investments under the PPP/C government.
“The difference between a child being born in Waramuri and a child being born in Georgetown many years ago – there is one difference; we are born with the same brain and that difference is opportunity.
“If we had the opportunity then we would have been far ahead. But the PPP/C is about opportunity. This is a party about opportunity,” Rodrigues said.
Rodrigues, who once served as Amerindian Affairs Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, addressed residents at the opening of the Waramuri Secondary School in Region One on Wednesday.
Rodrigues- Birkett hails from the community of Santa Rosa, Region One.
The PPP/C government has been rolling out a series of initiatives aimed at improving the livelihood of residents of hinterland communities. Overall, the aim is to ensure they have equal opportunities as coastland residents.
“It’s okay for us to dream now because our country is in a better position now and the leadership that we have for our country there is no other person or group of person that can lead this country right now,” Rodrigues-Birkett said.
Rodrigues- Birkett served as Minister of Amerindian Affairs from the period of 2001 to 2008 and as Foreign Minister from 2008-2015. In 2020, she was appointed as Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
