A 23-year-old motorcyclist, his wife, and their two-year-old daughter lost their lives in an accident along the Pirara Trail, Central Lethem, Region Nine, on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Jagnarine Stephen, his wife Kyrea, and their daughter Laurel.
Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred at approximately 11:20 hrs.
The family of three, from Yakarinta Village, North Rupununi, was travelling on a red and black motorcycle along the trail when they were struck by a minibus (BAC 8020). The bus, owned by Shawn Pedro of Tabatinga, Lethem, was being driven at the time by Darwell Bernard, a 34-year-old resident of Katoka Village.
According to the report, the minibus was proceeding north along Pirara Trail at around 50 km/h and, while negotiating a turn, collided with the motorcycle, which was speeding in the opposite direction.
As a result of the collision, the family was thrown from the motorcycle and fell onto the trail, sustaining multiple injuries.
An Emergency Medical Team from Lethem Hospital was summoned, and Jagnarine and Laurel were pronounced dead at the scene. Kyrea, who was unconscious, succumbed to her injuries while being transported to Lethem Regional Hospital.
The minibus driver was arrested and placed in custody. Two breathalyser tests conducted on him showed no trace of alcohol. Further investigations are ongoing.
