PPP/C to support construction of 40,000 new homes in next term

Building on its success in delivering more than 53,000 house lots over the past five years, the incumbent PPP/C now has its sights set on supporting home ownership on a similar scale.

In its 2025 manifesto, launched today at the Pegasus Corporate Center, the party pledged to support the construction of 40,000 new homes over the next five years, once it is re-elected to office on 1 September.

It stated that, in its next term, the party will “focus heavily” on the construction of new homes through the provision of direct assistance to build, particularly for the most vulnerable families.

This will include accelerated construction of core homes, the development of homes for young professionals, and continued provision of incentives to encourage affordable housing construction.

The manifesto also highlights the party’s intention to provide special support to persons with disabilities (PWDs) to ensure access to house lots and housing solutions.

Support for housing has come in various forms, including a steel and cement subsidy introduced in 2022. Since 2020, more than $500M in subsidies have been provided to thousands of families constructing homes costing $25 million or less.

Faced with a backlog of roughly 80,000 housing applications, the party said it will continue to aggressively expand its housing programme to eliminate this backlog.

Just a few days ago, at the launch of the International Building Expo, President Irfaan Ali said that clearing the backlog would require developing 20,000 acres of land—equivalent to nearly half of Antigua’s landmass.

However, he explained that land has already been allocated for the construction of the 40,000 houses that will be delivered by the PPP/C during its next term in office.

Additionally, the incumbent stated that it would continue to regularise any remaining informal settlements to provide residents with legal ownership and improved living conditions.

Communities across the country can also expect capital investment through upgrades, which will include concrete drains, streetlights, recreational spaces, and security cameras—a key component of the PPP/C’s ambitious Smart Country programme.

“Looking ahead, our aim is to ensure that every single Guyanese adult has within their reach the goal of becoming a homeowner and is able to live in a community that is comfortable and hospitable,” the manifesto reads.
