David Ragnauth, the 30-year-old truck driver who allegedly fatally struck down 23-year-old Alex Persaud along the Supply, East Bank Demerara Public Road, was remanded to prison on Wednesday.
Ragnauth from Kalichararan Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, made his appearance at the Friendship Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Wanda Fortune. He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and is scheduled for his next court appearance on September 10, 2025.
Ragnauth was arrested hours after the accident on August 13. He was attempting to flee and was apprehended during a sting operation.
Persaud, who was also a truck driver from Timehri Base Road, died in what relatives believe was a targeted attack linked to a court matter.
Persaud’s grandmother, Mary Sunich, had told the News Room that he parked his vehicle along the roadside with his wife inside, and was waiting to cross the road to collect his salary from his employer.
According to the grandmother, Ragnauth saw Persaud on the road and allegedly struck him down. Persaud was rushed to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Relatives say the suspect and Persaud were due to appear in court on August 18, 2025, for an ongoing assault case.
