Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken, along with his Executive Leadership Team (ELT), successfully conducted a ‘Family Violence Presentation’ on Saturday at the Officers’ Mess Annex, Eve Leary.
The presentation, aimed at enhancing the Guyana Police Force’s approach to tackling family violence, featured insights from Police Legal Advisor Mandel Moore and Assistant Superintendent Delon Fraser. The session focused on new strategies and comprehensive approaches to protect individuals affected by family violence, which continues to impact people across all socio-economic backgrounds.
Despite the robust strategies outlined, the officers acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly the underreporting of domestic violence cases. Concerns about fear, shame, and mistrust of authorities often prevent victims from coming forward. The presentations also covered the legal and logistical obstacles involved in prosecuting domestic violence cases.
The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’ (ag) Mr. Ravindradat Budhram, Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’ (ag) Mr. Errol Watts, Head of the Strategic Planning Unit (SPU) Assistant Commissioner Mr. Khali Pareshram, and Assistant Commissioner Mr. Mahendra Siewnarine, among other senior and junior officers.
During the panel discussion, pertinent questions and concerns raised by police officers were addressed, reflecting a commitment to refining the police force’s approach to handling domestic violence and supporting victims effectively.
