Police are currently investigating a fatal road accident that occurred Friday morning at around 08:30 hrs on Le Ressouvenir Public Road, East Coast Demerara, and which resulted in the death of 85-year-old Stephen Correia.
The incident involved a motor car, registration number PAG 7093, driven by 58-year-old carpenter Garfield Hoppie, who is a resident of La Bonne Intention (LBI). Correia, a pensioner residing at Lot 1, Le Ressouvenir, was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by the vehicle.
According to police reports, the car was travelling westward along the southern carriageway of Le Ressouvenir Public Road, reportedly at a high speed, when the pedestrian attempted to cross from south to north and was struck.
Following the collision, Correia was knocked to the ground, sustaining injuries to his left hand, left ankle, and other parts of his body. He was assisted by members of the public who helped lift him onto an ambulance. The injured man was then transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Garfield Hoppie has since been arrested and is currently in police custody, where he is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
The body of the deceased is currently at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination, which is scheduled to take place on Monday, 14th October 2024.
Police are urging anyone with further information about the incident to come forward.
