Junior National Squash championships commence Sunday

The quest to assemble Guyana’s next generation of squash stars commences this Sunday, as approximately 35 of the nation’s top junior players clash in the Moo Junior National Squash Championships, vying for both individual honours and a coveted spot on the national team for the upcoming Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships.

The Georgetown Club will serve as the battleground for the tournament’s climax on Saturday, April 12, while the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue and Camp Road will host the first five days of intense competition.

This tournament represents a pivotal moment in the junior squash calendar, acting as both a crucial test and a vital platform for players aiming to secure their place in the national team that will travel to the Cayman Islands in late June for CASA.

The championships will also play a key role in identifying the next generation of Guyana’s squash leaders.

With some established champions having aged out of the junior ranks, the tournament will unearth the new stars tasked with carrying Guyana’s ambition to reclaim the coveted Caribbean title.

Guyana has a rich history of success at CASA. At the last edition, held in the British Virgin Islands, Guyana finished second overall, with the boys’ team securing third place and the girls’ team finishing fifth.

Guyana’s dominance in the tournament is well-documented, having won the overall title in 2022 and achieving an unprecedented 12 consecutive titles between 2005 and 2016.
