Former GTU President, Colwyn King found guilty of rape

Former President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwyn King, has been found guilty of raping a child, following a trial at the High Court in Georgetown.

The 12-member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict on two counts of rape, stemming from incidents that occurred in April 2021. The virtual complainant in the matter is a female.

The court heard that the first assault took place at night when no one else was present, while the second occurred in the afternoon, again in isolation.

The case was presided over by Justice Simone Morris, with the prosecution led by State Counsels Muntaz Ali and Geneva Wills. King was represented by Attorney-at-Law Tonza Sarrabo.

Details of the assaults were presented during the course of the trial.

King had been out on bail during the proceedings but was immediately remanded to prison following the jury’s verdict.

Sentencing has been set for July 17, 2025, at 9:00hrs.

King previously faced a similar rape charge in 2009, but was acquitted by a jury in 2016 following a trial at the High Court.
